Dopamine is the molecule in your brain that makes you want things.

It is the reason…

  • …you reach for your phone without thinking.
  • …you scroll long after you meant to stop.
  • …you eat when you’re not hungry.
  • …you buy things you never planned to buy.

You do it because the dopamine system in your brain is out of balance.

Because then it makes you want things - even if you don’t like it.

And it pretty much applies to everyone. But why?

The Slot Machine In Your Pockets

It is pretty simple: You and I and pretty much everyone I know of… we all have these slot machines inside our pocket. And for our brain there is no meaningful distinction between scrolling on Instagram, TikTok or YouTube Shorts and pulling a lever in a casino.

Both are engineered to keep you on it.

Both train your dopamine system to crave the next hit.

Both are addictive.

And we live in a world, where there is as much “cheap” (easy to get) dopamine-inducing offering, as never before.

As mentioned, one of the biggest is scrolling, but also notifications, salty-fatty food, sugar, porn, Netflix, Podcasts etc. (in sum: constant stimulation).

It steals your mind, it steals your attention, it steals your agency over making your own decisions.

So, one question before we continue:

Are you addicted?

It’s time to be honest.

Please, on your phone, in settings, look at your screentime right now.

How much is it per day on average?

Look at the daily average of the last week to get a realistic idea. (Here is where you find it on your phone).

And then put it in this calculator:

Be aware that this does not even include laptop, PC or TV.

And now ask a sober question:

How much of this time really adds value to your life?

How much of this time is well spent?

In many cases, just minutes after scrolling, you cannot even recall what you consumed.

And if you were to look back on your life, you rarely remember (let alone value) the times when you scrolled Shorts/Reels, watched YouTube, Netflix or other high dopamine activities.

What you remember are the times when you had a meaningful conversation, felt a deep sense of connection, overcame a difficult challenge or had an overall great experience - things where you were immersed in the reality of life, not in moving pictures on a screen.

You are adapted to your surroundings. But why is that happening?

Your dopamine system evolved in a world of scarcity.

Food was rare.

Novelty was rare.

Stimulation was rare.

For example:

When a hunter-gatherer found a bush of colorful berries, dopamine surged. That surge helped them remember the location. It increased motivation to return. That mechanism kept us alive. It had an important function.

Today?

We have unlimited novelty. Unlimited stimulation. Unlimited “berries”, everywhere. Your brain hasn’t changed. Your environment has. It is more stimulating than ever before. And biological evolution is slow to adapt.

But: Dopamine Is Not the Enemy

If scientists disable dopamine circuits in animals, they stop eating — even when starving.

Dopamine is life.

We don’t want to eliminate it. We want to recalibrate the system.

Imagine:

  • Picking up your phone only when you decide to.
  • Being fully present in conversations.
  • Enjoying simple tasks like making the dishes.
  • Working deeply without constant distraction.
  • Feeling steady motivation instead of restless craving.
  • Being content with what you have.
  • Being fully present where you are.

That is not extreme discipline.

That’s a balanced system.
